Aerial Sewer Tour - Chorro Valley

I'm going to the annual meeting of SLOCAS, the San Luis Obispo Archeological Society, on Saturday, February 22 - today, actually. So it is always tricky to get there because their building is on the property of Camp San Luis, and I can never recall how I got there the last time. So I employ Google Earth to figure out how to drive my way there. Once when I was smart about this, I stuck a pin in the location. 

While I was hovering around the location, I spotted something else, a wastewater treatment plant!!! I may have been thinking wastewater treatment plants in connection with SLOCAS anyway. The County's Environmental Division Manager, Kate Ballantyne, who worked on our Los Osos WWTF, happens to be the Vice Chairperson of SLOCAS. She has turned up in this blog before. Plus, writing a blog like this for—horrors—EXACTLY eight years now to the day, that topic is never far from mind anyway.

Now, I can only imagine that this services Camp San Luis. The colors in the aeration basins look rather....funky. Actually, it looks abandoned. Where does the sewage go now?

Then I recalled the infamous California Men's Colony sewer in the Chorro Valley, that had multi-dumps of sewage into Chorro Creek over the years, which is fairly nearby to the Camp. So I looked around.

And I found the image below near railroad tracks - I saw this in person while on the train going to Portland, Oregon a few years back. Is this the CMC plant? It was south east of the CMC.

Anyway, it was a fun waste use of time time to try to ID these plants. Google does a lovely job on these aerials. I did look up the terms of service and it seems as I am non-commercial and display the logo, I won't get sued for using them!

A Different View....

A few days ago I traveled by train from San Luis Obispo to Portland, Oregon. It was quite an enjoyable trip! So of course when you have a sewer blog, you tend to notice things out the window such as wastewater treatment plants that might just blend into the background for the casual viewer. This is a slice of SLO County that you don't get from a road trip!

First, I concluded that this must be the wastewater treatment facility for Cuesta College and The Men's Colony, as after the plant, the very next thing was The Men's Colony. I couldn't find a website for the plant itself but the plant is visible from Google Earth if you'd like an overhead.

I caution you that these are dirty train windows with added glare, not a crusty camera lens.

On the way to the next point of interest is this blocked off tunnel. Click on the image below and look at the lower left portion, a heads up for what is coming up next.

Then we have an unknown spoutage shot. It is in San Miguel and right by Courtside Cellars. Not sure who it belongs to as Courtside is a pretty big operation and probably has a fair amount of wastewater to deal with, and there is a certain joyous feel to the spritz!

I hope to find more shots on the way back. I confess, I missed some from towns along the way north.
