Museum of London - FATBERG!!!

I was tardy getting all parts to The New York Times read from their April 1 edition. Last night I was cleaning out my office and ran across an article in the New York Times Magazine section called "Fatbergs." 

Sewer followers, this is a MUST READ!!!! Below is the link. Don't be put off by the subscription pop-up, just remove it by clicking the "X" in the upper right hand corner. The fatberg in question was broken up by sewage workers in hazmat suits and a section of it was saved and put into a London museum! That London fatberg, reported here in 2017, was the length of 22 double-decker buses and weighed the same as a blue whale! The online image is far superior to the print edition, so do NOT miss this article—and, as with all things New York Times, the writing is superlative!

Fatberg Video!

To follow-up on a former post, here is a "Fatberg" video (see link below). It purports to show its removal.....well, I didn't see that, but it is fun to see the actual entity, which is far more photogenic than other Fatbergs I have seen (online, alas, not in person).

Fatbergs!

Well, it has been a while since I have posted anything on fatbergs, so it is time to get caught up. I found two articles recently in the New York Times. 

Happy reading, just don't be eating breakfast or something whilst reading these; the description in the lower article describes a fatberg as having "...a smell that mixes rotting meat and smelly toilet."

(The lower link comes with a lovely color photo! The photo is from 2014 when another fat berg struck London. The current fatberg is called the "Whitechapel fatberg," and it is estimated to weigh 140 tons.)

"Fatberg" in London Sewer

We septic tank users don't often, if ever, get a view into the tank. Because pumping is expensive, and we are sitting on top of our water source, most of us try to be mindful of what we put in there. But in 2016 we will all be hooked up to our new sewer, and since some of us are imports from cities where we really don't give much thought to what goes down the potty, here is a glimpse of what could happen, on a much smaller scale of course, to our spanking new pipes (try not to gasp or puke, or maybe just don't go to this link):

So think before flushing. Our town's collective septic system at Bayridge Estates had a blockage on October 24 due to large chunks of grease and wipes. So now is a good time to start practicing good sewer stewardship as ghastly as that sounds.
